The author reports that from 2024 The Joint Commission will count a death by suicide as a sentinel event if it occurs in a healthcare setting or within seven days of discharge from inpatient, emergency department, intensive outpatient, residential, group home or transitional living settings, replacing the prior 72-hour window.
